The Organizing Committee of Malta Strategic Conferences and the second World Congress on Stevia & Stevia Growing announced the two prestigious for Naturex and Sweetleaf.

The second World Congress on Stevia & Stevia Growing was held in Malta last October 2010, and was inaugurated by Mrs Camilla Sandvik, from the European Commission, Directorate General Health & Consumer. She highlighted the importance of the European Commission to reduce the incidence of many chronical diseases prevention by various actions, and Malta Stevia Conference is one on them.

Pr Marvin Edeas, chairman of the scientific committee, confirmed that we need urgently many strategies to prevent sugar and salt-related chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases and ageing of population.

Among the conclusions of the second edition of Stevia Congress:

1)     In terms of scientific advances, participants and speakers agreed that more researches needed to clarify the exact role of Stevia at the level of cells and organs. More studies also needed to study the effects of all Stevia fractions and characterize their antioxidant and sweetener effects.

2)     In terms of industrials applications, the challenge of “Taste” will be a great task to be improved. If we need to attract consumers, we need to prepare well-balanced taste, in order to satisfy the pleasure of these consumers. Otherwise, Stevia will lose the “train of marketing”.

3)     Stevia 2010 awards: Naturex and Sweetleaf were the winners

Naturex was awarded the Most Innovative Stevia Product, for their product Talin®. The scientific committee was seduced by the originality of Talin®, as a natural ingredient and the association with Stevia, not only to improve the taste, but also the texture and functionality.

Sweetleaf was the winner for Stevia 2010.

Sweetleaf ® Executive Vice President Angus Flood commented:

“ Extensive scalable agricultural infrastructure is now in place in South America to support the rapid expansion of the third generation of stevia ingredient.  In countries such as Paraguay, the birthplace of stevia, this represents a viable alternative to tobacco production and an opportunity to support some of the poorest families. In Colombia, stevia growing is a viable alternative to marijuana and coca production.  This was a significant motivation to find a way of cost effectively delivering a food grade ingredient with meaningful corporate social responsibility. Having won several taste panels over the last few months and being a recognized and trusted stevia brand in the consumer market has resulted in real demand for the SweetLeaf® branded ingredient which will be launching in leading consumer brands from Spring 2011.  “

Mintel data indicates the world stevia market is expected to exceed $2 billion by the end of 2012.

About SweetLeaf Stevia® Sweetener

It all started with one man who had a dream – James May, Founder of Wisdom Natural Brands®.

Stevia is a naturally sweet herb native to Paraguay that has been consumed for centuries. After tasting stevia leaves given to him by a Peace Corps worker, May made it his mission to bring the extract from the deliciously sweet plant to the United States. May is known worldwide as “The Father of Stevia.” The process involves taking the highest-quality leaves of the stevia plant and extracting their naturally sweet taste with only cool, purified water – no chemicals, solvents or additives that adulterate and cover up the great taste created by nature.

May first traveled to Paraguay to import stevia in 1982. His most satisfying victory came in 2008, when GRAS Associates and Life Science Research Office, two completely independent panels of scientists, awarded SweetLeaf Stevia® GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status, pursuant to FDA regulations. This allowed SweetLeaf® products made from its new, revolutionary extraction technology to be labeled as sweeteners.

SweetLeaf® could finally use the word “sweet” to describe its product, now known as SweetLeaf Stevia® Sweetener. The FDA granted a no-questions letter to SweetLeaf’s® GRAS status in 2009, validating all the hard work done by May over more than a quarter of a century.

Wisdom Natural Brands®, a leading U.S. manufacturer of stevia products, offers both SweetLeaf® as a food and beverage ingredient and SweetLeaf Stevia® Sweetener as a retail product in convenient double-serving packets. SweetLeaf Stevia® Sweetener is sold in boxes containing either 35 or 70 packets. Each packet replaces two teaspoons of sugar. SweetLeaf® is also sold in the SweetLeaf Stevia Plus® Shaker Bottle for easy home use and SweetLeaf SteviaTabs™ Dissolvable Tablets for easy on-the-go use. Today, May is a leading expert on stevia and travels across the world promoting the benefits of the stevia plant.
